Hatha Vinyasa & Yin Yoga Retreat

Dates: 23rd – 30th July 2022

8 SINGLE ROOMS & 1 TWIN/DOUBLE AVAILABLE

Situated just 50km north of Malaga and nestled amongst the picturesque Andalucían Mountains is the beautiful and tranquil Centro Punto del Luz meaning “Source of Light” retreat centre. Established as a yoga retreat centre in 2009 by our hosts, Richard and Betty, it’s an idyllic venue where you cannot help but relax. Breathtaking views, spectacular natural beauty and perfect ‘feng shui’ combine to create an experience of living in harmony with nature. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the centre rests beside an open valley with a grand vista of both Lake Viñuela and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s perfect for walking too as the local scenery is stunning.

The centre was designed for yoga retreats and has five buildings arranged in a “village” layout on different levels, with four different areas to do yoga including a 65 sq metre yoga studio with infrared heating, a central open Moroccan-style patio, a yoga platform with views over the lake and the newly extended area around the swimming pool.

Rooms are inspired by a mixture of traditional Andalucían and ancient Arabic architecture, and furnished with an ethnic, rustic décor. They are separate from the core building, creating the perfect environment for absolute comfort and relaxation. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom and are equipped with a desk with a salt crystal lamp. Each room is south facing with a small patio outside giving magnificent views down the valley to the sea. There are nine guest rooms in total, and all are singles so for those of you who like a room to yourself there are no extra supplements are involved.

Sunbathing takes place by the oval, salt water, swimming pool, with its mosaic lining. Lay on the sun-beds with a book and look down through the olive groves to the lake below you and, far in the distance, glimpse the glittering sea, on a clear day you can see Africa.

Centre of Light is a vegetarian centre, food is lovingly prepared using only fresh, seasonal and and wherever possible locally grown ingredients. Most vegetables are purchased directly from a neighbouring farmer in order to get the freshest produce and support the local economy. All food is prepared using olive oil that comes from Periana (4 km away) and no other fats so commonly used in restaurants. They try to limit the use of dairy products and wheat in dishes and instead have these foods as separate options and are very lucky to be supplied with Chloe’s delicious organic eggs. Food at the centre is normally light and fresh and always includes a raw dish and is accompanied by lots of fresh fruit while dinner is a more substantial affair and always has a pudding at the end! Menus are carefully devised offering not only a balance of nutrients but an eclectic mix of raw, vegan, traditional Italian and Spanish cuisine. Full board is included daily which consists of a hearty breakfast after morning yoga practice, a raw food lunch and a nutritious evening meal, with the exception of Wednesday which is the excursion day, or the change-over day and the chef’s day off so this evening will be reserved for a trip to a local restaurant where you can buy a typical Spanish meal. The food here is absolutely delicious.

The Lake room is the heart of the core building and has a stunning view over Lake Viñuela and the Mediterranean Sea. The Lake room is used for meal times and also as an indoor area for yoga or any other group activities. Morning yoga usually takes place on the yoga platform on the the hill behind the centre. Surrounded by olive and almond trees, and shaded from the morning sun, the scent of the trees and plants will make these sessions even more special. The central patio is the heart of the property with its relaxing water feature and beautiful natural terracotta tiles. A perfect location for calm meditation or evening yoga practice. There is also the option of using the yoga studio or the newly extended 48 square metre wooden platform beside the swimming pool – the options are ours to decide. Yoga mats, blocks, belts, cushions and blankets are provided.

Reiki, “no hands” massage, nutritional therapy, Theta healing and Bach Flower remedies are available on-site with Betty, and reconnective healing and singing bowl therapy is available with Richard. Cost is €50 per hour.

A few minutes walk away is a local bar with coffee, drinks and snacks, and within walking distance is a traditional Spanish hamlet. Hot Springs, trips to the beach, and other excursions can all be provided by your hosts Betty and Richard.

Flights & Transfers – flights should be booked to Malaga Airport.

By Taxi – the journey takes approximately one hour by taxi. The cost of the taxi is €75 per journey (max 3 people). For larger groups we have a minibus which takes up to eight at €20 per person or €160 for the minibus. We will try to link people arriving at similar times so they may share the taxi cost. Arrive early in the day if you want this option.

By Bus – buses depart from Malaga bus station to Periana, times are 12.15 and 18.15.  To get to the bus station from the airport you need to get the Cercanais train (10 min) to the train station (bus station is right next door to the train station). Times from airport to Malaga Maria Zambrano are 03 and 33 minutes past the hour.

By Car – Car hire is available at the airport.

I absolutely love India and I’m so excited to be offering another retreat there at the fabulous Palm Tree Yoga Centre in collaboration with one of the UK’s leading yoga retreat companies – Free Spirit Travel. The retreat centre is situated in its own grounds surrounded by coconut groves and overlooking the beach in a peaceful bay, yet is only a 15 minute stroll or short auto rickshaw ride to the shops and restaurants of Kovalam. India is the birthplace of yoga and what better place to experience this ancient spiritual practice than in the tropical warmth of Kerala, the “land of coconuts”, a slender state along its Malabar coast. This is India at its most laid-back, a soul-soothing, serenely beautiful southern state that encompasses 375 miles of glorious Arabian coast, palm-fringed sandy beaches, glistening backwaters and the spice and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats dotted with wildlife reserves and hill stations. Besides all this, Kerala is also the home of Ayurveda, known as the “Science of Life” and one of its oldest healing practices.

Accommodation is spread over three buildings (Palm Tree, Curry Leaf and Pavilion). Palm Tree has four rooms, a shared lounge and the yoga shala is on the shaded roof so that you can practice with the Indian Ocean in your sights. There are two seaview rooms here at a supplement of £40 (10 nights) and £50 (13 nights). Curry Leaf houses the restaurant, a chill out lounge area and has two larger rooms overlooking the beach; both seaview rooms here are at a supplement of £40 (10 nights) and £50 (13 nights). Pavilion is the superior beachfront building and also has larger rooms with a large ground floor shared terrace and upstairs shared balconies facing the sea. Seaview rooms here are at a supplement of £80 (10 nights) and £100 (13 nights), and there are two rooms that face the coconut grove at a smaller supplement of £40 (10 nights) and £50 (13 nights). All rooms have either double or single beds, ceiling fans, mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms and are of a good standard. There is good Wi-Fi throughout the complex as well as a small Ayurvedic Centre where a range of treatments are available at very reasonable prices.

Yoga Classes

The yoga shala is fully equipped with mats, blocks, straps and bolsters so you don’t need to bring anything with you, and has overhead fans and blinds to keep you cool. Each class will be an eclectic hatha experience, with a focus on the fundamentals of a structurally sound yoga practice. Precise alignment in standing, seated and reclined poses will be woven together by a slow flow, and each session will focus on a unique foundational movement pattern and is sequenced to steadily build into more challenging asana. This retreat is open to all levels so beginners as well as those with a more skilled practice will be safely challenged.

The morning classes will start with quiet centering and pranayama to cleanse, ground and energise us, before moving into a deeper, invigorating combination of hatha and vinyasa flow yoga. With a sense of playfulness and exploration, each student on their individual level will work on improving flexibility, strength, stamina and balance, delving deeper into postures empowered by their breath.

The late afternoon sessions will be a yin-yang practice, a quieter more explorative class, bringing into balance the passive (yin) and active (yang) aspects of yoga with energising yet restorative asana, holding postures longer to allow a deeper release both in the body and the mind. Added to this will be an exploration into meditation, restorative yoga and yoga Nidrā (yogic sleep).

Each day after your morning yoga class a delicious breakfast is served, and on several evenings during your stay a scrumptious vegetarian/vegan dinner is provided. Kerala is renowned for its fabulous cuisine so on other evenings we can explore the many restaurants of Kovalam (and add in a little night shopping!)

Ayurvedic treatments and massages are available on site and local excursions can be arranged to the famous Keralan backwaters, wild life parks, local temples and markets and even a day trip to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Dear Bella,
Thank you so much for such a positive and uplifting experience in Kovalam, and for your wise counsel. I have not felt so calm and relaxed for a very long time. I feel so very privileged to have been part of this retreat, meeting such a great group of people and all the yoga. I already knew you were a good yoga teacher but the thought and planning which you had clearly put into each session was exceptional! Thank you!

Alison McMillan-Puri – Palm Tree Yoga, Kerala

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful Yoga holiday I had with Bella in Ischia. Her yoga as always was inventive, stimulating and sensitive to all the Yogi’s on the holiday. Her passion to make the holiday (we call it a holiday rather than a retreat!) a wonderful experience for all of us, was embraced by open arms by the Yogi’s. The group bonded extremely well and we spent most of the time in each other’s company. The hotel with Michele as our main point of contact was perfect for this week – he looked after us very well. The food (delicious), accommodation (simple but clean) and surrounds …breath taking … were a delight Thank you!

Set in 47 acres of land, with its own private beach, vineyard, golf course and farm, this beautiful 4 star hotel feels like you’ve been dropped into an Agatha Christie movie!

Tucked into a tall cliff with stunning views overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, its old world charm (Sofia Loren was a regular guest here), impeccable service, elegant and grand public rooms, spacious terraces overflowing with bougainvillea, this hotel has everything you’d need for a relaxing yoga getaway to recharge your batteries.

There is a swimming pool at hotel level, with fabulous sea views and the private hotel beach is reached by a 92-metre-high lift that takes you almost to sea level where terraces have been built for sunbathing. Here you’ll also find a casual-dining alfresco restaurant serving lunch on the terrace overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.

This is an eco-venue with its own organic farm and vineyard that provides the hotel with farm to table fruits, vegetables, olive oil, wine, milk, cheese, eggs and homemade jams and preserves.

Breakfast and 3-course dinners are included daily (vegetarian and vegan options are also available) and are served by friendly waiters in starched white uniforms adding to the overall charm of this beautiful hotel. On summer days and nights meals are taken in the elegant outdoor restaurant on one of the two sunny terraces overlooking the sea. Rooms have a double or two single beds, and are on two levels, either with a shared terrace or a ground floor patio facing a shady wooded area. All rooms are en-suite.

The third shala will be a platform overlooking the sea just above the private beach – a perfect place for a spot of sunset yoga.

There is a small village with shops and cafes nearby, reached by taxi (€5), and other local excursions include an old town and market, thermal baths, and a boat trip so there are lots of options or just lay in the sunshine.

Bella Somerville

Hi, I’m Bella, the yogi soul behind Brighton Bella Yoga.

I am an experienced 500-hour Yoga Alliance instructor and a self-confessed yoga junkie who is passionate about sharing this beautiful wellbeing practice with the world.

I teach yoga because I can transform students and positively change lives by helping people find more on the mat, rediscover their potential and get more out of life.

I offer an eclectic fusion of hatha, vinyasa, yin and restorative group yoga classes in Brighton, Hove and the Sussex area, as well as offering private lessons tailored to individuals’ needs either through Zoom or in-person. I also run yoga workshops for private or corporate events and residential retreats both in the UK and overseas. I regularly donate my teaching skills to charities and local events such as the Brighton Yoga Festival run by the Brighton Yoga Foundation, which is a registered charity dedicated to making the health and wellbeing benefits of yoga accessible to all.

I have a lot of energy and it’s contagious so you can expect fun, uplifting, challenging classes with intuitive flowing sequences that combine mindfulness, breath and functional movement to strengthen the body and liberate the mind. My classes are as individual as a box of chocolates, no two classes are ever the same but they are all irresistibly sweet, sprinkled with humour and accessible to everyone from complete beginners to seasoned practitioners. I believe in connection, togetherness, wholeness, supporting one another, understanding, individuality, freedom, compassion, truth, generosity, happiness and peace for all living beings. This for me is true Yoga, a union of mind, body and soul principles, disciplines and wellbeing practices that allow us to not only live in harmony with ourselves, but also with our communities. Yoga is so much more than just a physical practice, it’s a way of life, a code of morals and values that lead us to a much deeper awareness of who we really are and how we truly feel. We all know instinctively what’s good for us, and yoga just unlocks the door, it allows us to connect with ourselves on a deep and powerful level and that for me is where its true benefits are to be found. It grounds us, uplifts us, inspires us, it makes us strong, healthy and ultimately incredibly happy. What’s not to love!

When I’m not on my mat (or encouraging others to be), I love to travel. I’ve crossed 4 continents overland and visited 57 countries to date. Variety is the spice of life I say! I’m also a keen skier and have been leading group ski trips to Europe and North America for over 30 years. I lead numerous yoga retreats worldwide (check out my ‘retreats’ page), combining my passion for travel with yoga. I believe in travelling responsibly, and carefully source my retreat venues and providers so as to have the least impact on the natural environment whilst also knowing that local communities directly benefit from our visit.

Our voice is our divine gift and I feel incredibly grateful to have found mine so I can inspire others to find theirs. We live in an abundant world and can support each other to shine. I’ve always said “Happiness in an inside job” so come and join me for a transformational class, an inspiring workshop or a life-changing retreat, and start smiling from the inside out!
