I absolutely LOVE India and I’m so excited to be offering another yoga holiday there at the fabulous Palm Tree Yoga Centre in collaboration with one of the UK’s leading yoga holiday companies – Free Spirit Travel. The yoga centre is situated in its own grounds surrounded by coconut groves and overlooking the beach in a peaceful bay, yet is only a 15 minute stroll or short auto-rickshaw ride to the shops and restaurants of Kovalam. India is the birthplace of yoga and what better place to experience this ancient spiritual practice than in the tropical warmth of Kerala, the “land of coconuts”, a slender state along its Malabar coast. This is India at its most laid-back, a soul-soothing, serenely beautiful southern state that encompasses 375 miles of glorious Arabian coast, palm-fringed sandy beaches, glistening backwaters and the spice and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats dotted with wildlife reserves and hill stations. Besides all this, Kerala is also the home of Ayurveda, known as the “Science of Life” and one of its oldest healing practices which can be easily incorporated into your holiday at our own in-house Ayurvedic centre.
Accommodation is spread over four buildings (Palm Tree, Curry Leaf, Pavilion and Beach House).
Palm Tree has four rooms, a shared lounge and the Yoga Shala is on the shaded roof so that you can practice with the Indian Ocean in your sights. There are two sea view rooms here at a supplement of £40 (10 nights).
Curry Leaf houses the restaurant, a chill out lounge area and has two larger rooms overlooking the beach that are for twin or double occupancy only. They are both sea view rooms and are at a supplement of £40 (10 nights).
Pavilion is the superior beachfront building and also has larger rooms with a large ground floor shared terrace and upstairs shared balconies facing the sea. Sea view rooms here are at a supplement of £115 (10 nights), and there are two rooms that face the coconut grove at a smaller supplement of £40 (10 nights).
Offsite Accommodation: Kovalam Beach House is an additional building behind the Curry Leaf Restaurant and set slightly back in the coconut grove, that is available to book independently. The top floor has three rooms, two of which are sea view facing and share a balcony, whilst the third room is at the rear however has use of the same shared balcony at the front. The ground floor rooms are similar in that two are at the front and sea view facing, whilst the third is at the back but all three rooms share the same front veranda and patio. If you wish to book any of these rooms, please inquire for details.
General Information: All rooms have either double or single beds, ceiling fans, ensuite bathrooms and are of a good standard. There are several rooms that now have air conditioning which, if used, is at a supplement of £75 per 10 nights or £10 per night and is only available between 6pm and 8am daily (this is payable locally to the yoga venue). There is good Wi-Fi throughout the complex as well as a small Ayurvedic Centre where a range of treatments are available at very reasonable prices.
Yoga Classes
The yoga shala is fully equipped with mats, blocks, straps and bolsters so you don’t need to bring anything with you, and has overhead fans and blinds to keep you cool. Each class will be an eclectic hatha experience, with a focus on the fundamentals of a structurally sound yoga practice. Precise alignment in standing, seated and reclined poses will be woven together by a slow flow, and each session will focus on a unique foundational movement pattern and is sequenced to steadily build into more challenging asana. This retreat is open to all levels so beginners as well as those with a more skilled practice will be safely challenged.
The morning classes will start with quiet centering and pranayama to cleanse, ground and energise us, before moving into a deeper, invigorating combination of hatha and vinyasa flow yoga. With a sense of playfulness and exploration, each student on their individual level will work on improving flexibility, strength, stamina and balance, delving deeper into postures empowered by their breath.
The late afternoon sessions will be a yin-yang practice, a quieter more explorative class, bringing into balance the passive (yin) and active (yang) aspects of yoga with energising yet restorative asana, holding postures longer to allow a deeper release both in the body and the mind. Added to this will be an exploration into meditation, restorative yoga and yoga Nidrā (yogic sleep).
Each day after your morning yoga class a delicious breakfast is served, and on several evenings during your stay a scrumptious vegetarian/vegan dinner is provided. Kerala is renowned for its fabulous cuisine so on other evenings we can explore the many restaurants of Kovalam (and add in a little night shopping!)
Ayurvedic treatments and massages are available onsite and local excursions can be arranged to the famous Keralan backwaters, wild life parks, local temples and markets and even a day trip to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.
